Let me address a common question from friends about choosing between Notion AI and ChatGPT.
Notion AI and ChatGPT have different positioning and use cases. If you use it purely as a conversational Q&A tool, Notion AI delivers a poor experience — conversations feel disjointed, follow-up questions are clunky, and it falls far short of ChatGPT or Claude. The real value of Notion AI emerges when it is integrated into the production workflows within Notion itself.
Six Core Uses of Notion AI
1. As an AI Q&A Tool
Let Notion generate answers directly — this is the use case closest to ChatGPT.
2. As an AI Writing Assistant
When creating content in Notion, you can invoke Notion AI at any time for assistance — AI continuation, tone adjustment, multilingual translation, repurposing an article into different formats for multi-platform distribution, and more.
3. Assisted Reading and Document Digestion
Let Notion AI help you read and digest your documents with features like highlight-based Q&A, highlight translation, and smart action item detection (find action items).
4. Creating Notion AI Buttons
Solidify your prompts and link them with Notion's reusable Templates — this use case has the most room for imagination.
5. Page-Level Content Reading and Writing
Currently, Notion AI can only read and write content at the Page Text level (including simple tables). However, Notion is already testing AI read/write support for database structures, which will make it even more powerful in the future.
6. Notion's Future Vision
Notion's ultimate goal is to become a tool that creates tools. The Button feature added in 2023, the already-launched AI, and the database automation still in testing (similar to Lark's Multitable bots) are all bringing it closer to that vision. AI makes the already-promising future of Notion even more promising.
Should You Subscribe to Notion AI
The bottom line: if you are a Notion beginner and do not use Notion as a core productivity tool, you have absolutely no need to subscribe to Notion AI. If you are an advanced Notion user, I would recommend subscribing — it is an excellent enhancement for Notion. If you fall somewhere in between, my advice is: if you have spare budget, give it a try; if not, skipping the subscription will not make much of a difference.
